Dominic Fike is an American singer, songwriter, as well as a multi-instrumentalist. He is popular for his songs “Phone Numbers”, “Hit Me Up”, “Politics & Violence”, and more.
Early Life and Childhood
Dominic David Fike was born in Naples, Florida on December 30, 1995. Fike is of Filipino, African-American, and Haitian origin and grew up with a younger brother, Alex, a sister, Apollonia, and an older brother, Sean. Fike liked Jack Johnson, Blink-182 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He originally picked up a guitar at the age of ten and began learning to play songs by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Fike noted that as a youngster, he and his siblings had to look after each other because his parents were frequently absent from his life. Fike’s boyhood was “full of adventure,” as he and his pals spent time in a woodland area near their neighbourhood known as the “Forest of Avalon,” where they ate snacks and smoked cannabis. He and his elder brother Sean would also hang out in his buddy Stefan’s guest house, known as the “Backhouse,” where they would freestyle. Later, they formed a formal rap collective with members Slyte, Ike Lysergic, and Seno. They gained a following in the neighbourhood, and Fike founded a sub-group known as Lame Boys ENT. In 2015, the trio started getting recognition in the local media and was booked for music festivals.
Fike began uploading music to the Internet in high school, and his debut song on YouTube is “Not A Word”. He also taped songs he had recorded. Fike briefly enrolled in college but dropped out after only three days.
Career and Professional life of Dominic Fike
Fike originally gained attention by producing beats with his then-producer, Hunter Pfeiffer, which led to the publication of numerous successful tracks on SoundCloud. At the age of 21, he released the EP Don’t Forget About Me, Demos as an independent artist in December 2017, while on house arrest for violence against a police officer. He went to the Collier County Jail for breaching his home arrest. The EP piqued the interest of numerous record labels, resulting in a bidding war. After being released in April 2018, he signed with Columbia in August for a reported $4 million. During the bidding battle, all of his earlier work, including the EP, was removed from all streaming sites.
Fike stated that his main motivation for joining a record company was to pay for his mother’s lawyer fees, who was facing drug charges at the time.
Columbia reissued the EP on October 16, 2018. The single “3 Nights” was released the same year. The single received widespread attention and peaked in the top 10 of the charts in Australia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. When compared to Jack Johnson’s music, it had an acoustic guitar tone. It was played on various radio stations and Spotify playlists and garnered positive feedback from publications such as Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and Billboard. Billboard identified Fike as a “genre-mingling” artist in regard to the EP, and subsequently labelled him a breakout performer to watch, calling “3 Nights” “Motown-tinged, trend-proof, and enticing.”
